Summary: They say opposites attract, and how true it holds for the two of them. They would, at first, not seem to even be a couple. Perhaps only good friends – odd friends, to be sure – but nothing deeper. It seems hardly likely that two such seemingly different people could be compatible at all.
Comments: My Ash-jie requested this, so I wrote it for her ^_^ Odd pairing, I know, but never hurts to try new things, eh? ;D
Watching the sun rise slowly, its light spreading to the edges of the sky and illuminating the city second by second, Shou cannot sleep. The day has barely begun, but perhaps that is why. He loves mornings, always waking up early – sometimes even before the sun rises.
Conversely, his lover, Kanon, usually rises far later – sometimes in the late morning, once or twice even in the afternoon. And all because he is always sleeping late, for his love of the night.
Opposites.
They say opposites attract, and how true it holds for the two of them. They would, at first, not seem to even be a couple. Perhaps only good friends – odd friends, to be sure – but nothing deeper. It seems hardly likely that two such seemingly different people could be compatible at all.
For starters, they are in different bands with different styles.
Shou smiles when he remembers the first time he saw Kanon, at least indirectly. It was in a magazine that both their bands were in. Kanon had his signature black hair and usual street fashion style like his band, filled with bright colours and plenty of cute accessories. The band’s music was cheerier, the kind of music that made you smile and want to dance.
At that time, Alice Nine had a darker style – more dramatic makeup, darker costumes that would never be worn anywhere else but onstage, photo shoots and other such events. Their music was darker, heavier, something to headbang and scream to.
Truly, they were so different then, and still are.
But something drew Shou to the seemingly sweet and innocent bassist of An Cafe. There was something behind that very innocence that attracted Shou, and after being with Kanon for so long, he knows what it is.
It’s the very essence of Kanon himself, what makes him, well, him. It’s more than all the fashionable clothes and the image that he presents to the rest of the world. It’s more than the bass he almost always has in his hands, the music that he plays from it.
It’s the way Kanon smiles at just about everything in life.
It’s the way Kanon looks at things, with his own perspective, unaffected by anything else.
It’s the way Kanon wakes up extra early, or stays up extra late just to catch anime marathons on television.
It’s everything Kanon does, thinks, and breathes. His qualities differ him very much from Shou, but Shou does not mind. He loves how despite these differences, they still inexplicably fit, like they were predestined to.
He remembers their first date three years back. To them it’s a date anyway, no matter what others might say of it.
Shou was getting coffee at a small cafe in a small, out-of-the-way street that was frequented by only a few people. It was his day off and he felt like relaxing someplace that nobody would know him. At the queue, he thought the person in front of him looked strangely familiar.
It was then he realised that it was Kanon – the same one from An Cafe. Even without makeup, he looked almost the same, and possibly even cuter than he appeared in magazines.
He bravely spoke to Kanon, and the young bassist smiled at him and graciously, if a little shyly, invited him to sit with him. Shou happily agreed, eager to get to know more about Kanon. Someone he had seen so often in magazines, and yet had never spoken to, despite being in the same industry.
What was supposed to be a short afternoon chat at three in the afternoon became an hours-long dinner date, filled with plenty of interesting conversation. They simply got along so well, clicking the moment they met. Shou treated Kanon, and they only left at the cafe’s closing time – nine thirty – and did not once realise how long their talk had been.
“I guess I’ll have to treat you next time, then?” Kanon joked, as they stepped outside into the street.
“So there’s going to be a next time?” Shou asked teasingly, although he remembers hoping that it would be so.
Kanon blushed prettily, and replied shyly, “If you want to… and are free.”
“I have another couple of days off during the next weekend. How about you, Kanon-san?” Shou asked eagerly, and then they made another date for next Sunday.
Their first kiss occurred on their third date, three weeks from their second one. They met up early and left late, at the same cafe. When they got out of the cafe, Shou kissed Kanon impulsively. He remembers Kanon’s initial shyness and uncertainty, but after a while, damn was he good. Shou can honestly say that was the best first kiss he ever had, and ever will have.
They went out on many more dates and had far more kisses after that. Within a year, Shou asked Kanon to move in with him and Kanon did, deciding to live with his lover at last, instead of with his bandmate. And Shou was glad to no longer be alone at last, living with the one he loved.
Of course, their lives as members of two of the biggest bands in Japan interfered with their love lives a little bit, cutting into their already limited time with each other. But it never stopped them – and never will, Shou thinks with fierce determination – from loving one another.
Both national and international tours are tiring as hell, with the prolonged periods that they are unable to see each other. They have fought about it before, but thankfully these situations are always resolved. They always make it a point to call one another at least every couple of nights, and see each other over webcams.
When they finally return home, it will always be to an immaculate apartment and warm, loving embraces from the other.
Only their band members and immediate families know about their relationship. Their bandmates and best friends are always there for them, of course. As for family, Shou is glad to say that they are for the most part supportive, and even though both of their parents were a little against it at first, they have slowly come to accept their relationship, seeing how happy they are with each other.
Happiness for Shou means being with Kanon, loving and trusting him. Having Kanon means needing nothing and no one else.
“Ohayou,” Kanon’s familiar voice says softly, jolting Shou from his thoughts.
Shou turns around, smiling, and whispers the greeting back to him. Though he is wrapped up in the blanket, Shou can still see the outline of Kanon’s body, the oh-so-gentle curves of it. He smiles wider, and walks to the bed, before sitting on it and cuddling his lover to him.
“Ohayou,” Shou murmurs, and dipping his head, kisses Kanon deeply.
His fingers trace the shape of Kanon’s rather petite frame lovingly, fingertips knowing every inch of skin. Every kiss seems better than the last and this is no exception. Their love and connection can only grow deeper, and how Shou loves it.
It’s a long while before Kanon pulls away with the need for air. He smiles and grins up at Shou, and then the two of them say in unison, “Happy anniversary.”
